I started Kosmos Q back in 2009 from the linen closet of our house, with the $500 from my last good credit card, and a mountain of reasons why this probably wasn’t going to work. But what I did know at the time, was a thing or two about overcoming adversity.
So let’s start off at the beginning...
I grew up in El Reno, Oklahoma, but I spent most of my childhood in the burn ward of the Shriners Hospital in Galveston, TX. When I was really little, I was in an accident at home that left me with burns on most of my body. In some weird way, I was destined to become some kind of a BBQ SuperHero.
Healing from the burns took a lot of time, but when I was old enough to start working, my first job was at one of the original Oklahoma Onion Burger places in El Reno, called Roberts Grill. It was there that I learned a whole lot about cooking and what it meant to create something through plain old hard work while cooking food for hundreds of customers every day. This was the beginning of my cooking and BBQ journey.
As life continued, I found myself driving hazardous waste all-around Oklahoma City in a truck all day. During that time, I also started getting creative at home on the weekends, cooking BBQ. After experimenting with my recipes and cooks, I began to learn from my family and friends that I was pretty good at this. So, I saved up every penny I could to buy my first little smoker and I hit the Competition BBQ Circuit. I’ll never forget rolling up in my truck and unloading my little camp next to these guys with their big RV’s and pro rigs. I was totally out of my element. But in a David and Goliath moment, I took first place in ribs that day and I was bit by the BBQ bug for LIFE.
At this point, I was still using other people’s products, and at one competition, I had the chance to meet the guy who made most of the products I was using. I had questions and wanted to pick his brain about an injection I was having trouble with, but that arrogant bonehead totally blew me off. I was so riled up, I decided right then and there I would make my own products to get even.
I began to experiment with BBQ product inventions, and surprise, surprise, I went on to win five Championships (including one World Championship). Now if you don't know what that is in the BBQ world, it’s kinda like winning a gold medal in the Olympics, NASCAR, and an Academy Award all rolled into one.
Once I started racking up the wins with my products I made a shirt with the hashtag #itjustwins on the back so they could read it and weep while I strolled up to grab my trophy. I did this at every competition I could get myself into and still make it back home in time to run my route come Monday morning. #itjustwins later became my slogan for Kosmos Q.
I drove my family all over Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Arkansas just trying to get my name out there. After a few more years of working for the weekend, I finally got the courage to stop driving the hazardous waste truck, fire my boss, and go all-in on my dream of becoming a BBQ SuperHero.
I bought myself a food truck and ran all over Oklahoma catering events and working food truck rallies. We even got named one of the top 3 food trucks in the country in 2015!
With all this winning, my products started to take off, so before too long I had to close my truck and focus full time on orders for Kosmos Q.
I started making YouTube videos just as a way to get out there and see if we could get some more customers. I had no idea that people would watch them.
Now with over 170,000 customers worldwide and over 19 million+ views on YouTube, I’m just getting started!
I’ll never forget what it felt like to get the door slammed shut on me when I asked for help. That’s why here at Kosmos Q, I’m never too busy to help someone out.
I like to say it like this: Since the beginning, our mission has been to help barbecue fanatics who want to make the most badass Q on the planet, by equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to make the best BBQ every time. We want to inspire people to savor their bbq experiences while creating unforgettable memories with their family and friends.
