BBQ Ham and Eggs | $5 Breakfast Recipe

BBQ Ham and Eggs | $5 Breakfast Recipe

They say breakfast is the most important meal - and nothing beats a ham and eggs breakfast cooked on the grill! A budget friendly solution from back when we were on the road winning BBQ competitions, it still holds up as an all-time favorite.

You Will Need

  • Ham steak
  • Shredded hash browns
  • Eggs
  • Southern Buttermilk Biscuits
  • Spray butter
  • Butter
  • Vegetable oil
  • Kosmo’s Q SPG rub

The Prep

To pull this off, you’ll need to set up your pit for 2 zone cooking. This means one side of the cooking area is directly above the heatsource, while the other side benefits from radiant heat.

On our Weber kettle, this meant arranging the charcoal on one side, leaving space for a pan filled with water on the other. The water will deflect some of the heat on that side. But depending on the gear you’re cooking with, this might look different.

The Cook

Let’s get this party going. Spray some disposable aluminum pans with spray butter, and place the biscuits inside. You don’t want to cram them up too much, since they will stick to each other when rising. Place the biscuits over indirect heat, and cook till golden brown. Keep an eye on them - you might need to rotate if one side cooks faster than the other.

When done, slice in half, add a scoop of butter, and put them back in the roasting pan. Cover with foil to keep them warm. Next up, the hash browns! Preheat a cast iron skillet over indirect heat with a splash of vegetable oil. When hot, throw in the hash browns. Season with SPG, and let them turn golden brown as well.

Crack the eggs into a smaller pan, season with SPG as well, and fry over direct heat. When you’re about to flip, move them to indirect. Lastly, throw the ham steak over direct heat. This will take but a couple of minutes per side - you only want to put a little char on it.

The Payoff

All the different parts are coming together - your grilled breakfast is almost ready! Only thing that’s left to do is find a large enough plate that can hold all of it. Pro tip: if you find that some of the components are done way before the rest, cover them with aluminum foil until you’re ready to serve.

This way everything will stay warm - nobody likes cold fried eggs! Once everything is on your plate, grab a fork and knife, and dig in. Enjoy your cheap, quick breakfast cooked on the grill!
